A modern take on a very traditional Harris tweed jacket

Monday, 5 March 2012

In my search for middle age style I'm always on the lookout for modern takes on traditional clothes. The traditional tweed jacket is generally not well-tailored; it's usually a bit sack-like in cut, a little long in the body for today's taste and (for me) too wide across the shoulders. This limited edition Harris tweed jacket from John Lewis is cut short, slim and slightly waisted, but comes with traditional features like leather arm patches, dogtooth check fabric and flapped pockets. As such, it's ideal for all ages, as it combines traditional and modern styles so well.

It's good to see British design and manufacturing being supported by a large retailer. The jacket is [was] available on-line [link broken, sorry] for a reasonable £299.

Mr TNMA bought a Harris Tweed jacket at our local market for a tenner - might have to steal it!

Go for it, although they get a bit warm once the temperature gets over about 10 degrees Celsius! GF

Link broken or probably out of date and John Lewis don't seem to recognise the item. Do you have any more information on it? Thanks

Hi, I'm sorry about that - it seems that it's probably out of stock now and I have no more information than here in the blog. I've seen some good looking tweed coming through for this coming autumn, so keep an eye out - or try vintage Harris tweed. Please let me know how you get on.
      GF.

      Hi Dave,

I was in JL at the weekend and saw a picture of a vey nice tweed waistcoat on a large advertising board in the shop. No sign of it on their website or any tweed at all in the shop though! The 'assistant' I spoke too first claimed it was last seasons (these are new boards!) then failed to find it, or any tweed at all on their website. Eventually he asked someone else, who claimed it is the new AW12 season and not due in for another month or so. He then said that not all stores would get that range in, so keeping an eye on the website is the best bet. I am firmly convinced that part of the reason for the continued recession is that it is sometimes so difficult to spend your money on something you want!
      Cheers

I think they undersell some of their own clothes ranges - and some are made in very limited numbers. They are usually helpful in JL in my experience but there does seem to be a gap between their shop and online sales. GF
