To show that I listen to my readers' kind suggestions, I've taken a photo of rolled up pink chinos with contrasting bright blue socks, as suggested following my post here.
I'm still not convinced it's me, but that's searching for style.

Nice try... but no cee-gar on this occasion.
ReplyDeleteOh drat! Something else for next time! GF
ReplyDeleteYou will get used to short pants, after wearing them a few times.
ReplyDeleteWhen wearing short pants, flashy colored socks look best when they match/pick up color from other parts of the outfit (shirt, tie, belt, pocket square, etc). That way you are moving the color of the socks upward, not isolate it. You want to make it look kind of planned, not just something that was thrown together. A great tie-up shoe also helps a short pant.
When dressing, you are making a visual picture with clothing. There is really not that much of a different from a painting on canvas, a room that is interior decorated, dressing, or landscaped property. It is all about color, and shapes, and how you move them around and work with them.
The short pant is a modern twist on the traditional-seen before-tastefully boring look of regular length pants. Fashion is for the adventurous, everything else is a uniform for the masses.
Thanks - Excellent advice. I like the final sentence particularly.
ReplyDeleteI was wearing these with a bright blue Gant jumper which, I had to grudgingly admit, combined well with the socks.
Many thanks for your comment.
GF.
i had to comment.
ReplyDeletefirst, i say you completely nailed it. literally, completely.
the chinos are perfectly slimmed out with the right width of cuff. the contrast between the cobalt blue socks and from what i can tell (i'm guess the picture's colors have been slightly saturated) very slightly faded salmon-colored chinos, is impeccable. all tied together with sueded brogue oxfords. nailed it. i really like it.
also, i agree and disagree with matching your socks to another element of your outfit. i agree it can help with drawing the eye upwards, (see the picture of sam lambert in your post with pics from the sartorialist post). but i also think that socks should match you, and stand on their own like the gentleman with purple socks from the first picture in your sartorialist post. his socks are unique to his outfit, and only remain true to the color family (blues and purples) not anything else he's wearing. so while i agree with the idea that socks can tie well into the rest of your outfit, i also needed to say that they do just fine on their own.
cheers
