Canali is a family-owned business that's been around since 1934 and is now in the third generation of the family. It has a strong foothold in Asia and USA, but its sharp tailoring and beautiful fabrics are not yet widely known in the UK although Canali has a store in London and is stocked elsewhere.

Canali is proud of its Italian manufacture and its combination of quality and style offers a timeless Italian touch to any man's wardrobe. Their passion for the tailoring process comes across in the careful and vivid description on their website of their manufacturing processes.
One of my favourite pieces: blue denim-effect wool capri suit, £1080 |
It's all about the detail, with as much attention given to small elements, such as buttonholes and pocket construction, as to the structure and assembly of each garment.
I have yet to wear any Canali menswear, but the attention to perfection, the classic lines and the quality of the construction and materials make this a brand to try. Colours from sober to bright go with textures that bring a twist to what would otherwise be a strongly classic collection. I particularly like the Spring/Summer jacket with bellows pockets and an action back (pictured below) which personifies this approach to tailoring.
The older man will find much here to provide a classic look with plenty of scope for those personal touches that reflect the mature man's personality. The quality of Canali is widely recognised; their clothes and accessories are used and worn by men from President Obama, Michael Douglas, Toby Stephens and many more. Not for me. Seems a bit 'nipped'. I prefer the generosity of British cutting.
