The Search for Style 2: What is Style?

Thursday, 18 January 2018

To find style we need to know what it is. 'Style' is defined by the OED in this context as both 'A particular design of clothing' or 'fashionable elegance or sophistication'. The first definition contains no judgement of quality, the second implies something that is better than most. A man's style might be unkempt, scruffy or unfashionable - but he is unlikely to be called 'stylish'.

Which are stylish? Which have style?

In my examination of style over the next few weeks I'm trying to identify how a man can find a stylish style. I suspect most of us recognise style when we see it. A man or woman gets on the train and something about them makes them stand out. What is it? Is it one factor or many?

Have a look at the images above. Which, to you, show persons that you'd consider stylish? There's no right or wrongs; it's your decision. Identify what you like or don't like about each. Are there any factors that govern your decision?

In the next feature we'll pin down the elements of style. Meanwhile, have a look at my Pinterest boards here where I collect some of the looks that appeal to me (and a few that don't).

I’ll go out on a limb here and suggest that anybody that has put thought and care into their appearance has style. We all of us have different styles (as the series of photos suggest) and not all may agree with others’ styles, but if you’ve tried, that’s generally enough for me.

    David,
Gosh this is a difficult subject! One mans style is another mans gardening wear, I would not be able to define it at all. Some of the photos to me are stylish whilst some, to me, are not and I would not be so forward to say which as I am sure my opinion contradicts many of your followers.
I love following your blog/pinterest/etc. posts they give me plenty of ideas.
    Regards,
    Colin

Thank you Tony and Colin - good point about the extent of style. I agree we all have style to an extent; I'm trying to identify what is good, ie 'stylish' style. Not easy.

All we can do is look at lots of inspiring images and decide for our selves.

David, you're spot on. Style can be hard to define, but you know it when you see it. What does drive me crazy are two things...one, when men look like they fell out of bed and went out the door...two, an older man dressing like a teen.

That being said, I agree with Tony that simply putting a little thought in appearance can display style.

So very much enjoy your blog!

    Best regards,
    Charles
