Hunter's Tweed - a long tradition

Thursday, 4 April 2013

I have been sent a beautiful roll of tweed by Hunter's Tweed and intend to have it made up into a jacket when I have found a tailor. I hope, in due course, to describe the tailoring process here on Grey Fox.

My Hunter's Tweed Kildary Elfin tweed

The rise in popularity of tweed and the resurgence of the country look will have been obvious to anyone with even a passing interest in men's fashions. Menswear shows at London Collections: Men earlier this year and the Savile Row event at Spencer House were a riot of tweed, brogues, plus fours, thick woolly socks and even a gun dog.

Such style is not new and there are people around who have been supplying this look for years, rather than as a response to a passing fashion. Hunter's Tweed is one of these; a family-run business founded in Scotland in 1901, which supplied tweeds to Scottish sporting estates, providing cloths unique to each. Here they were worked hard by lairds, keepers, stalkers and ghillies, earning such respect through their durability that the company became known as the 'King of Tweeds'.

What better tradition to tap into during an era which is seeing the revival of popularity of such products? The rise in its popularity masks the purely practical origins of tweed. As someone who wears the fabric a lot, I know how warm, weatherproof and comfortable it is to wear. Added to this is its durability and, above all for sporting purposes, its natural camouflage properties.

Hunter's Tweed use the cloth for purposes other than clothes - as the images below illustrate. For more information see Hunter's Tweed's website here.

Very eager to see your eventual jacket take shape. I agree heartily on the point about comfort. Sadly, half of the year, at least, is too warm here in the Central U.S. for tweed, but I enjoy my vintage Harris and Donegal jackets during later fall through mid-Spring in any case.

    Best Regards,

    Heinz-Ulrich von B.

    This will be fun.
I've looked at nothing but men's shirt collars since your post about the many different kinds(I exaggerate slightly).

What gorgeous fabric! Green with envy here - and looking forward to seeing it made up. You ought to go in and watch/photograph/blog the jacket's creation, if you're allowed to!

Many thanks all - I do intend to record the making of a jacket once a tailor has been found!

Sorry, I'm a bit late commenting here.

Great to see you've bought some Hunter's Tweed too. I visited Tamara from Hunter's last week and came back with some amazing cloths for my next range of bags!

Lovely people - stunning cloth. I can't wait to see your suit.
