XO Grey Fox

I'm taking a couple of days off from the blog

Saturday, 25 May 2013

This morning I lost Cocoa, my chocolate labrador companion of nearly 15 years. I didn't realise I would miss a dog so much - he had grown up with my children and was part of the family - so I'm going to take a few days off the blog.

The photo below was the last I took of Cocoa. He's setting off on his last walk, among the wild garlic and bluebells.

Within 30 minutes he had died in our arms on the hillside above, with the beauties of the valley set out below us. He's been buried in the garden and I'm building a small cairn among the quarry workings to mark where he died.

Cocoa has appeared a few times before on the blog. Here he takes a swim. While I'm away, please have a look around; I'll be back soon.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my 16-year-old American Eskimo last October and it also was far more difficult than I could have expected.

Take care, and as always thanks for your blog.

So sorry to hear about your dog, Cocoa. Funny how close we become to pets.

    Best Regards,

    Heinz-Ulrich von B.

I know how it feels - like you have lost part of yourself . I hope you will , in time , think of getting another dog . I still miss the oldie we lost two years ago but the youngster bouncing about , enjoying life, helps such a lot . Can I put a word in for a rescue dog ? So many needing homes & it is a real pleasure to see them happy again .

So sorry to hear about your loss. Keep thinking and talking about him: to speak of the dead is to make them live again.
    Regards, Johan

Sue and I are very sad to hear of your loss. Speaking from experience of having lost both cats and dogs we have always found the answer to be to bounce back as soon as possible with another pet - it will never replace but you will begin another chapter.

    Take care

    Mark

Sorry for your loss, they're never really gone and live on in our memory for ever, Our Staffie Hetty died some 5 years ago but for some time we kept seeing her out of the corner of our eyes, I nearly tripped over here little black shape more than once even though she wasn't there!
Just the other day I caught myself just about to scrape the left overs into her food bowl....memories live on of our four legged friends,

Sorry for your loss. My guy is 13, in good health, but I often think about what you must be going through. I enjoy the blog and hope that your memory of the good times will ultimately overwhelm the sense of loss that you're dealing with now.

Sorry to hear that.... having a 12 year old Chocolate lab myself, am also going to have to face the inevitable myself one day soon.

Keep you chin up, and somewhere he's running around a field chasing rabbits of swimming in a warm lake...

    Really enjoy your blog!

Thank you for all the lovely comments, e-mails and tweets from everyone all over. I was worried I was making a fuss, but they do become so much part of the family that they are badly missed when they go.
