Andrew Glover - a watch made in England |
There was a time when one could buy a mass-produced quality watch made in the UK - Smiths, for example, had factories in Wales and England. Those days are gone and mechanical watches are made largely in Switzerland or the Far East. At the opposite end of the scale, George Daniels made exquisite bespoke watches by hand until his death in 2011. There are companies that assemble watches in this country from parts made outside the UK, but the manufacture of watches using British-made movements is rare.
Andrew Glover makes watches using new old stock movements which were made by the Smiths factory before it closed. This enables him to sell a genuinely British-made watch at a reasonable price.
Andrew sent me the following details of their specifications -
Case materials - silver, Stainless steel, titanium, 9ct gold or 18ct goldStrap - Alligator hide, hand made in Italy. In a choice of black, dark brown or tan.Movement - 18000 BPH Manual wind, made in EnglandFront and rear crystals are sapphires.Diameter 36mmLength lug to lug 46.2mmThickness - 13mm
The watches each come with a 5 year warranty.
Andrew adds that he has had a few enquiries for customised versions and told me that,
"As I hand make each watch to order I am able to design the watch with the buyer to create something unique to them. For example, at the moment I am working on a skeletonized version with a white vitreous enamel skeletonized dial and black rhodium plated movement for a buyer".
