The final two of my spring and summer jackets features will look at a brace of contemporary labels, one British and one Italian. You will be able to read about Brunello Cucinelli in the next post, but today I focus on what has become a classic British label, Hardy Amies.

Indigo linen fine weave single breasted jacket by Hardy Amies £595 Shirt, Milton Green |
We received three jackets from Hardy Amies for our summer jackets and blazers feature. The brand that needs no introduction at all, other than to say that the cool tailoring, beautiful construction and gorgeous fabrics made these a delight.
The indigo fine weave linen jacket (above) was crisp, lightweight and sharp; the two chevron linen double-breasted jackets (below) with peak lapels were soft, cool, comfortable and fun to wear. I'd sum up as describing them as classic yet very contemporary.

All of the jackets you have featured recently look lovely. However, none of them will fit me, as not a single one offers short fittings. This is all too common in my experience. Tall men are well catered for with Big and Tall, and short women are well catered for with Petite sizes. Short men, however, are largely ignored. And yet the average height of a man of my generation (i.e. now in his forties) was only 5ft 9ins, so there are plenty of men like me who are 5ft 9ins or less. That's a lot of potential customers who are not catered for. I appreciate this is no fault of Grey Fox. I just thought I would express my disappointment at seeing yet another British clothing company I would happily support if only they would make something in my size.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Simon. A valid comment. I don't check with brands to see what fittings they offer. If none of these offers a short fitting the answer may be to go MTM or bespoke. I've recently reviewed Edit who make very reasonably-priced suits, shirts and jackets. Keep an eye open next week for my MTM Dashing Tweeds summer jacket at £650 it offers British designed and made cloth and London tailoring with great flexibility of style and cut.

Hi Simon,
ReplyDeleteI shop with guys of different heights all the time - and you're right, it is difficult to get blazers in different lengths. A couple of places that do offer them however are Banana Republic and Suit Supply (http://eu.suitsupply.com/en_GB/jackets)
Unfortunately they're not Made in Britain but they do have the sizes.
Also, if you go for the more modern brands, the blazers are usually cut shorter anyway so if you're 5'9" I think you'll find they're ok.
I've certainly shopped with lots of guys of this height and not had any problems.
I hope that helps a little bit - feel free to contact me for more info if you like (look on the Styling tab at the top of the blog).
