Kaweco Sport: A Brass Fountain Pen

Friday, 3 November 2017

I met an Instagram contact, James Couzens, recently and noticed he was using a brass fountain pen which had, through use, acquired an attractive patina. He told me that it was a Kaweco Sport, made by a German company. I had to have one, a deal was struck and Scriptum in Oxford, where James works, supplied me with one.

The pen is well-packaged and arrived in a retro-looking tin. For writing it has a heft and balance which makes it a pleasure to use. It writes smoothly (I specified a fine nib) and has rapidly become my favourite writing instrument. With the top in place it's only 10.5cm in length and, not having a pocket clip, I suspect it's designed to rattle around in one's pocket with all the loose change, used hankies and dog biscuits; which no doubt helps the rapid formation of the brassy patina. Its solidity reminds me of a brass nautical instrument, robust and unbreakable. I look forward to mine acquiring its signs of age and use.

Congrats on a great pen! I was delighted to see my favourite gentleman of style reviewing a fountain pen. :)
Those Brass Sports are really sturdy, and write well. The kind of pen that you can take with you on a hike and never worry about it. They just get better with age (and adventures) too! Cheers.

    Dear Mr Evans,

Thank you very much for this contribution. I received my Kaweco rollerball (I'm afraid I've spent far too much time scribbling with ballpoints to use a fountain pen) yesterday, and my Kaweco pen clip today. I'd had vague ideas about looking for pens for ages, but then you showed me this brass series. The only problem is my daughter wants one too... But two rollerballs with the clip are only about €150. And they really look like nothing else.

    Yours sincerely

    Guy Wilson

Hello, I was wondering if this is filled from an ink bottle, which I presume it is, or if it takes cartridges? Thanks, Gill

Thanks guy, they are lovely aren't they?

Hello Gill. To use bottled ink you buy an adapter (as I did). It doesn't cost much extra.
