For the middle-aged cycling man of style there's vintage cycling jerseys

Tuesday, 13 December 2011

Well of course we could wear modern cycling jerseys for our rides, but surely there is more style and fun to be found in itchy, hard-to-wash, sweaty, smelly woollen vintage jerseys like this Italian example.  Note that Grey Fox has been careful to match bike and helmet to the grey(ing) hair.

Pink is the colour of La Gazzetta dello Sport which gave its colour to the pink jersey worn by the leader of the Giro d'Italia - la maglia rosa.  Yes, real men wear pink.

And here's part of my jersey collection -

    i. could. not. agree. more.

vintage cycling has a decisively sartorial feel, and i hadn't even considered picking up a vintage jersey.

I agree, just look at some of the old cycling photos from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Go for it - generally eBay is the place to get them. Thanks for your comment. GF

Lycra? I can't come at lycra - been cycling every week for over 50 years (still use it to go to the gym) - and you won't catch me in Lycra. My ideal has not been produced yet - it probably lies between Cyclist's Touring Club 1940s-1960s and the look Brooks are vainly seeking - Tweed Ride without affectation.

What brand are the string-backed gloves shown here, do you know?
