Travelling light - what does a mature man of style require for his summer journeys?

Tuesday, 5 August 2014

Travel light. The older man setting off on his travels doesn't want to be laden down with unnecessary luggage. Here are some ideas for the grey fox setting out unencumbered on a summer journey. For the British gentleman of style, most (but not all) of my selected items are Made in Britain.

Essential and useful is a shorts suit. Lightweight and wearable on the beach, the lakeside restaurant or for soaking up culture in the Uffizi. From Dashing Tweeds (30% off in August).

Take a few good quality basic items, suppliers listed below -

Keeping well-manicured is essential before hitting the casino - so here's an air safe manicure set from Czech & Speake which conforms with international hand luggage restrictions.

And finally, a stylish bag to fit everything in. From Tusting, this Harold Chellington dark blue leather holdall is made in England and, like its owner, can only improve in appearance as it ages -

Suppliers
Dashing Tweeds
Monsieur London (Fair trade straw hat from Ecuador)
Sanders Shoes
Margaret Howell
Age of Reason
Cherchbi
Oliver Peoples
Quba
Tusting
See the relaunched Czech & Speake website.

Every year without fail the fashion houses try to flog the Shorts Suit to no avail. The 30% per cent reduction mentioned would seem to be in the trousers !!. Only in Bermuda & then only having given due consideration to the state of one's legs. Varicose veins etc will ruin any cool look, Seriously though great blog keep up the good work

Shorts suit, never, unless you are under the age of 5. Bag and coat needed, but your examples too fussy. Linen long sleeve shirt, straw hat, white bucks and sunglasses, absolutely.

    Thanks again for the comments.

As an older man I wear shorts; I also wear a summer blazer. Putting them together (sensibly) can work.

Varicose veins are a factor to be taken into account in wearing shorts, certainly, but needn't stop a man wearing them - just choose a sensible length and cut.

From the photo it seems men who wear shorts suits arrive at cocktails on a skateboard. I expect they then order a drink that has an umbrella in it. Apart from that an excellent selection.

Rob, any grey-haired man without a skateboard is simply not cool enough. ;)

Nice selection GF, but I'm afraid I'm with the haters when it comes to shorts suits, however well-kept one's legs are. While I can see more the shorts/blazer appeal, it's still liable to remind those of us of a certain age of holiday camp entertainment staff, no? While I'm the only man I know who does take a suit on holiday, I just think the shorts suit is too idiosyncratic too be much use really. Just my two penn'orth, Spike. Best wishes, AJC

Thanks AJC, it looks as though I'm out-voted - but this is my blog so I going to exercise my right to out-vote everyone else and say I like (some) shorts suits ;)
