Gloverall make their products in England. Their 1951 Collection takes inspiration from old images of of early fifties Grand Prix motor racing. As you'd expect, the duffel coat takes an important place in the collection, as do car coats and bombers in a variety of fabrics: herringbone tweed, waxed and bonded cottons, wool and chunky knits.
Here is all that a man would need to wear to bomb over to Silverstone in his British racing green MGTD to watch Fangio, Parnell and others wresting their Alfa Romeos, BRMs, Ferraris and Maseratis around the track.
Monty duffel coat - Gloverall 1951 collection |
I first saw this collection earlier this year and was impressed by its classic feel; my favourite piece was the herringbone tweed bomber (the bomber also comes in a waxed and quilted rally jacket style finish). For more information and to buy, click on Gloverall 1951. There is a partner collection for women.
I was banned by the females in my life many years ago from wearing duffle coats because of the image. For anyone over 50 the Gloveral range looks a bit too 'old man'. Great on a younger generation who never wore a duffle! Maybe if duffle's take off again I can sneak a Monty in the wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteA very impressive collection!
ReplyDeleteThanks all, I know what you mean, John, I struggle with that one too. AS ever, it's worth trying it to see. It's how you wear something that counts.

Hi Grey Fox,
ReplyDeleteYes, there's some nice stuff here. Your favorite tweed bomber is also mine. I used to wear a duffle coat when I was a youngster but I have the same feelings now as JohnAHobson.

David
Some lovely designs here, you can tell these coats are of really high quality as well, perfect for wandering round the countryside in!
ReplyDeleteI'm not tall enough, I don't think, to pull off a duffle coat, but I love the herringbone bomber (very tempted!).
ReplyDeleteIt's a very European look I think. If anybody down under dresses like this to come and look and talk about cars or car loans, I might not be able to hold my laughter.
