Good Day Sunshine shirts: Made in London for the winter sun

Wednesday, 17 December 2014

For those lucky enough to be chasing the sunshine this winter, there is an interesting range of luxury cotton shirts available from Good Day Sunshine shirts.

They are designed and made in London, England from 100% American Supima® cotton, which is woven into a cool, lightweight pique fabric in Switzerland. The extra-long yarns of Supima® cotton result in a more luxurious, softer and yet durable fabric.

They are nicely-cut, with a tailored fit. The long-sleeved version features a two-button cuff; useful for wearers of larger watches. The lightly-lined shirt-style collar looks good under a jacket, without appearing too stiff or formal. The hem is longer at the back and the side vents and slimmer fit help the shirt fit comfortably and neatly.

Also available with a short sleeve, this is a versatile and very wearable shirt, ideal for the beach, the poolside, or equally fitting around a dinner table. It goes well under a lightweight jacket, suit or blazer and is designed to stay smart even after a long flight or journey. Minimalist in look, it can even be worn with a tie.

I don't think that this is a shirt for warmer climes only. I've been wearing mine very comfortably in the chill of a London winter. The detail of the shirt is remarkable; it's good to come across something into which so much care, thought and skill has gone; giving a true mix of polo and formal shirt. This is a shirt that deserves to be noticed.

If James Bond was after a shirt for his foreign adventures, surely it would be this one. Available in several colours, see Good Day Sunshine for more information or to buy.

What to wear at the polo - Hackett style

Monday, 4 August 2014

I had a wonderful day at the Rundle Cup polo event recently. Sponsored by Hackett, the Cup is a hard-fought match between the Army and Royal Navy polo teams.

You'd think that the Navy had little use for horses on board their ships, so the result would be a foregone conclusion, but, although the Army won on this occasion (see below), they don't always have it their own way.

I managed to take a photo of the winning Army team with one hand, while, with my spare hand, I had to physically restrain a young lady from Hackett to prevent her throwing herself at the Royal Prince playing for the Army team.

Style for men at a polo event? Smart casual is fine - blazer or linen/cotton jacket, lightweight trousers or chinos (bring out the brightly-coloured legwear for the event), deck shoes or summer brogues and colourful socks. A good hat, usually a Panama, is essential. All available from Hackett, of course.

Going casual at Debenhams - something for everyone

Wednesday, 17 April 2013

Buying online often throws up unexpected finds. As an older buyer of menswear I often overlook pages online which are stocked with jeans and casual wear, assuming incorrectly that there'll be nothing there for me. So, digging around on the Debenhams website here, I decided to look a bit more carefully than usual at Levi's products and at polo shirts, just to see if there was anything that I'd like.

As regular readers know, I don't agree with the view that older men shouldn't wear jeans. As long as they fit well, and aren't too artificially faded and torn, denims are for every age. Indeed, they were around long before any of us, so no one generation has an exclusive claim to them. See my thoughts here on older men and jeans.

So, I've looked for Levi's jeans and chinos and for polo shirts. Below are examples of what I found, any of which, correctly fitted, will look cool, stylish and casual on a man of any age. Levi's offer jeans and chinos in a wide choice of colours, reflecting the more adventurous approach to trouser colours that men have embraced - no longer are Levi's blue and nothing else. Pinks, corals, bright blues and orange tones; try them and see.

Polo shirts are a great invention - comfortable, easy to wear and maintain, they come in all colours and style - but make sure they fit well and the colour and pattern go with the trousers. Think of the overall effect of what you wear, not each item individually.

Have a look here for Levi's and here for polo shirts to see what suits you at Debenhams online.
