So what have I learned so far?

Sunday, 11 December 2011

There's a fine line to be trodden between being a poseur and being subtly stylish.  Early on I realised that sticking with classics is a good approach.  For example, a man cannot go wrong with a pair of brogues.  This is an image that I liked -

I took this shot below of my own brogues last year, early on in my search for something to replace the anonymous shoes I was wearing.  A classic design, brogues work well with formal or casual wear and, for the man of mature years, are preferable to a pair of battered trainers (I'm at the age where I feel that trainers should be used exclusively for the purpose they were designed - sport!)

Are there any particular 'brands' you would recommend for a good pair of brogues? I have a pair from Oliver Sweeney that I would like to upgrade...

Hi Mishaal, thanks for the question. As I'm on this side of the pond I try to buy shoes made n Northampton, the traditional home of shoemaking here in the UK. Many shoes are now made in India and elsewhere which can be good quality, but I like the idea of supporting the home industry. I have a pair of Loake Chesters which are made from butter-soft leather and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. I've heard a lot of good things about Trickers. From the US, I'd love to try some Florsheim Imperials one day! Good luck with your search.
    GF.

Ducker & Son in Oxford is a wonderful shoe shop with Northampton made Oxfords and brogues. I've been going there on and off for nearly 30 years and the shop has barely changed in all that time.
