Middle-aged man buys vintage tweed suit shock

Thursday, 26 January 2012

I've been wanting a tweed suit for a while and last year got as far as visiting a local tailor to discuss being measured for one. It didn't happen, but idly browsing eBay one day I noticed one in my size, or thereabouts. A modest bid secured it and it turned out to be in excellent condition.

It's an oatmeal Harris Tweed suit of, I would guess, sixties or seventies vintage from the cut and label. It doesn't seem to have been worn much, although the material is so robust it would probably take several years of continuous wear before it showed any signs of use! The jacket is waisted with wide lapels.

A few alterations were needed, jacket shortened and shoulders taken in, trousers slightly altered and turn-ups fitted. I bought some new leather buttons as some were missing. One day I'll post a picture of Grey Fox wearing it.

    Hi Dave,

i tried on a few Harris Tweed jackets recently and they are not cut very fashionably; very conservative and little different from your 70's suit it seems. That jacket will look great though once you fix the lapels.

I did used to own a jacket like that and wore it to work for about 5 years or so. Foolishly 'charity shopped' it when I changed jobs 10 years ago and needed a suit everyday.

    Keep on blogging!
    Cheers

Thanks G, I agree about the lapels, but it doesn't look too bad and anything seems to go lapel-wise at the moment. Best wishes, GF

"Shoulders taken in?" Isn't that a costly undertaking? Many thanks, incidentally, for your engaging posts over the past year or so.
