Nearly ten years ago I badly damaged my right foot in a cycling accident (yes, another one). For a long while I thought I would no longer be able to wear my favourite shoes - brogues. I tried a few pairs of mid-priced brogues, but none were comfortable. Eventually I tried a pair of Loake Chester brogues. What attracted me to them was that they are made here in the UK, unlike many other leading brand (and pricey) brogues which are made elsewhere (India for example). The Loakes have turned out to be supremely comfortable, due partly to the supple leather of the tan calf uppers. They are beginning to acquire that patina of age that the best shoes show after a year or more's wear.

I've had the very same ones for about three years. Mine have a couple of loose eyelets and someone from Loake told me the company would fix the problem or replace the shoes if I return them. Great customer service. Unfortunately I like my brogues so much, I'm loath to be parted with them so I just wear them every few days with an eyelet or two working its way along the laces.

ReplyDeleteIf you go on to the Loake website they do a service whereby you send them your shoes and they will refurbish your shoes, new soles, laces clean and polish them etc on the original last's and you don't lose they way your feet have worn them in. I believe it costs about £60 and takes a couple of weeks, but it's a worthwhile investment on shoes that will last for many years.

ReplyDeleteDo you know of any UK made Goodyear welt brogues that have a removable insole? After a cycling accident I have to wear orthotic insoles and I tried the Loake Chester but there was insufficient space to accommodate the insole.
